You may have noticed a sudden drop in your water pressure at times, possibly accompanied by a rusty colour to the water. Don’t worry. It’s because the borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce is inspecting the valves in the drinking water distribution system.

This inspection will be carried out all over the borough to determine the operational state of the valves and make maintenance recommendations. It will be done from August 3 to September 15, 2020, Monday to Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. to noon, approximately.

What does the inspection involve?

It consists of a verification of the valve mechanisms in the system to detect any anomalies, defects or breakages that could affect their operation. During the inspection, there may be a temporary drop in water pressure, with or without a rusty colour of the water. We recommend checking the colour of the water before using appliances like your washing machine, to preserve the colour of fabrics. It is preferable to wash clothing and dishes outside of the times when the inspections are to be done.

What to do if your water is rusty

  • First, unscrew the aerator at the tip of your faucet.
  • Next, run the cold water at maximum from the home’s main faucet, typically the one for the kitchen sink.
  • Let the water run for around 30 minutes, until it is clear again.

If the rusty colour persists after the times scheduled for the inspections, contact 311 to make a service request to your borough or to report a problem.
