To support healthy cohabitation with users, a Canada goose population management program is in place in the borough of Lachine’s riverside parks from mid-April to September.

The Canada goose is a protected species that is growing exponentially. This migratory bird is staying longer and longer on the shores of Lachine. Our riverside parks are ideal for their breeding, particularly because grass—their preferred food—is abundant here. With each bird producing a kilo of droppings a day, this poses a sanitation challenge in our parks.

A natural relocation for migratory birds

A company specializing in the control of avian species considered pests in urban environments was commissioned to set up a goose management program. The methods used to scare the geese away to more suitable sites are based on a scientific approach.

Technicians on hand during the summer season rely on active scaring techniques to relocate the birds and thereby prevent them from flocking to green spaces. The technicians use active methods, either a trained dog or a remote-controlled car. If necessary, a boat can also be used to relocate geese to the water.

Why should we not feed wild birds?

The public is moreover urged not to feed geese and ducks. The food they are given may be harmful to them. Signs are posted in the borough’s riverside parks to raise awareness of the rules in force.
