High foot traffic in the park over the past few years as well as a growing number of unauthorized trails have damaged the soil and vegetation on Mount Royal. This fall, the city is starting the third phase of planting to protect the mountain and close these trails.

Unauthorized trails on the mountain have multiplied, and runners, walkers and cyclists have begun using them more frequently, threatening the biodiversity of the park.

We are carrying out work to restore weakened ecosystems by planting 8, 607 shrubs and indigenous species to allow 8.26 km kilometres of unauthorized trails to return to their natural state.

Work will take place from mid-September to mid-November, 2023. The project aims to cover 37.5 kilometres of unauthorized trails in the park between now and 2030.

Gates and signage

To protect these new plants, our teams will be installing 5.7 kilometres of discreet gating and 400 temporary signs.
