The 36th edition of the Pierrefonds-Roxboro Art Contest took place on Friday, December 2, with the awards gala in the presence of Mayor Dimitrios (Jim) Beis and Borough Councillors Louise Leroux and Chahi (Sharkie) Tarakjian.

The gala was followed by the vernissage of the exhibition presenting the works of all participants.

This year, 116 people took part in the contest. Of these, 45 were first-time participants.

Gala and exhibition

The jury selected 28 winners in the Amateur, Youth, Adult and Senior categories, as well as in the Professional category. The winners were announced at the Gala held on Friday, December 2 at the Pierrefonds Cultural Centre. The guests then moved to the Pierrefonds Library, where the vernissage was held, featuring the works of the 116 participants.

Special mention of participation

During the vernissage, the borough mayor presented certificates to 14 adults from the Omega Resources organization, which provides support and assistance to adults experiencing mental health problems. This was their first participation. This special mention is to encourage them and to recognize their efforts in creating and presenting a work of art.

New Youth Category

The Youth categories are now divided into three age groups. The 5 to 12 years old group has been split in two: 5 to 8 years old and 9 to 12 years old. The 13 to 17 year olds form the third group in the Youth category. This allows a greater number of youth to shine and win prizes.

Monica Brinkman

Monica Brinkman was born in Ontario, Canada in 1970 to a German immigrant father and an Acadian mother. She grew up in the western suburbs of Montreal and has lived in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region since 1992.

Monica is a professional mosaic and multi-disciplinary artist. She creates contemporary style mosaics. Her artistic journey began as a child sewing patchwork and collecting seashells and sea glass on the beach while visiting her grandparents’ cottage in New Brunswick. Her inspiration for the subjects of her work is based primarily on social issues, the human condition, the environment and of course her childhood. Although her work is a blend of craft and art, she is also inspired by the variety of materials available to her, including their colors, textures, clarity and luminosity and all the possibilities that come with them.

Her mosaics are characterized by the great variety of tesserae, smalti, stained glass, ceramic tiles, porcelain dishes, fabrics, natural fibers and any piece that attracts her attention by its beauty and originality. She works with a two dimensional vision, and three dimensional art Monica has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally. Monica is well known in the art world for her role as an artist in the community. Through cultural mediation, she has carried out numerous collective art projects in schools, with different organizations and groups of citizens. Diane Collet

Diane Collet is an expressionist artist best known for her offbeat imagery. She is passionate about satire and irony and her internal mantra is “nothing is sacred”. An ordered universe gives rise to certain patterns, but she looks for elements that do not fit into these patterns, specifically contrasts between how things seem to us and what they are in reality. Incongruities become fodder for her images.

She uses traditional mediums to create drawings, paintings and mixed media works, and new technologies to make videos and limited edition digital prints.

Born in Shawinigan, Quebec, she has exhibited in Canada and abroad since the 1980’s. As an educator, she has taught various art courses including visual language and creativity techniques in private CEGEPs and art centers in and around Montreal. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Arts from Concordia University in Montreal.
