On Monday, November 6, 2023, the borough of LaSalle inaugurated the Promenade Lionel-Boyer, located between rue Allard and boulevard Angrignon in LaSalle, in the heart of the Quartier Angrignon.

The Borough wanted to pay tribute to Lionel Boyer, former mayor of LaSalle from 1963 to 1971. Mr. Boyer was the only former mayor not to have been given an individual toponymic designation, neither for a street nor a park. It was therefore important for the borough to remedy the situation. This linear public space on the former Canadian Pacific right-of-way was the perfect location to create a place for people to pass through, get together and relax. Just a stone’s throw from the Angrignon metro station, the Promenade features a multi-use trail, a universally accessible pedestrian path and a number of other attractions (ping-pong, small gardens, pétanque, exercise stations, a relaxation area, street furniture and greenery as well as security and mood lighting).

“It’s a pleasure and a privilege for me to officially inaugurate the name of Promenade Lionel-Boyer today. This completely revamped public space provides us with an opportunity to remember that era of great change as well as Mayor Boyer’s contribution to the development of our borough,”

Mayor Boyer was a key figure in LaSalle’s residential, commercial and industrial development. During his two terms of office, LaSalle enjoyed unprecedented demographic and economic expansion. During those years, LaSalle’s population grew from 36,000 to 73,000. Among Mayor Lionel Boyer’s achievements were the separation of the police and fire departments and the authorization of alcohol sales in commercial establishments and restaurants in 1967.

Thirty-three years after his death, this toponymic designation in his memory is a gesture of recognition for his commitment to the residents of LaSalle.
