Equipment repairs under the Home Adaptation Program (HAP)

Last updated November 1, 2023

Have you received a subsidy under the Home Adaptation Program? If you have any broken equipment, the city can help you cover the costs of repairing or replacing it.

Description

Since January 1, 2021, Montréal has been covering the costs of eligible repairs to HAP program equipment on its territory, whether it was installed with a grant from the SHQ or the city.

Is your equipment broken or in need of repairs? The city will cover the costs under the following conditions:

  • The equipment was installed specifically for you, in your home
  • It was subsidized as part of a home adaptation program (either SHQ or Montréal)
  • It is no longer covered by the manufacturer’s or contractor’s warranty
  • Sustains damage not resulting from poor maintenance, renovation work or a disaster
  • The equipment meets Régie du bâtiment standards

If the equipment was installed for someone else but you are now using it, a report from an occupational therapist confirming that you need the equipment will be required. This also applies if the equipment was moved for purposes of installing it in another home.

Eligible equipment

You can receive financial assistance to repair one of the following pieces of equipment:

  • Platform lifts or stair lifts
  • Overhead lifts on tracks, including sling replacement (certain conditions apply)
  • Automatic door opener, including a garage door opener
  • Access ramp
  • Communication equipment (intercom paired with an electric latch)
  • Gate opener

In some cases, for example if the equipment no longer meets standards or if repairs are deemed too costly, the city may recommend to replace the equipment rather than repair it. The decision will be made after your application is evaluated.

How to apply

You must get an authorization number from the city before starting the work.

To get this number, call 438-820-8955 and leave a detailed message including the following details:

  • Your first and last name
  • Your date of birth
  • Your address
  • Your file number
  • The equipment to be repaired
  • The company doing the repairs

The city will contact you as soon as possible to confirm that it has approved your application. You will also be given an authorization number to forward to the company doing the repairs.

Once the repairs are completed, you (your landlord, or your representative) will have to sign the invoice to confirm that the work was satisfactory. The invoice must provide details regarding the work that was carried out, as well as the price. If the invoice is not detailed enough, a detailed purchase order must also be provided.

The company in charge of the repairs will send the city the invoice for payment.

Billing after work

Lorsque la réparation est terminée, vous (votre propriétaire ou une personne qui vous représente) devez signer la facture afin de confirmer que les travaux ont été réalisés à votre satisfaction.

The bill must include details on the work completed and the cost. If it is not specific enough, it must be accompanied by a detailed and signed purchase order.

C’est à l’entreprise de transmettre la facture signée à la Ville, pour son paiement.
