See how the eco-friendly parking lot at Aréna Rodrigue-Gilbert in Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles helped reduce heat islands and optimize stormwater management.

A useful and ecological vocation

The parking lot was redeveloped in 2018, and it has since become a true cool island. It includes:

  • Several plant beds.
  • 47 trees from 13 different species and numerous hardy shrubs to improve the site’s biodiversity.
  • Shelters for indigenous insect pollinators.
  • Discrete lighting to respect wildlife.
  • Drainage pavers as well as surface and underground retention basins to reduce the volume of water that collects in the sewers.

This project was conceived entirely to favour the establishment of nature in the city with the objective of accelerating the city’s ecological transition.

A unifying place

The result of this transformation? A sustainably developed location where the public space is front and centre. Several educational stations were integrated into the project to build public awareness about environmental issues, and two safe pedestrian paths were added.

In addition to being a unifying place, the parking lot features electric vehicle charging stations and a bicycle shelter in order to promote sustainable mobility.
