By taking part in the food waste collection, you’re helping to cut down on the amount of waste produced, while reducing methane emissions, a powerful greenhouse gas. What’s more, composting food waste generates high-quality fertilizer.

Ask yourself these questions to determine whether a material is acceptable in the brown bin or not:

  • Can it be eaten? If so, it’s compostable!
  • Is it paper or cardboard soiled with food (e.g. a pizza box, a paper hand towel)? If so, it’s compostable!! If you’re not sure about certain materials, check out RECYCQUÉBEC’s Ça va où? app.

Here are a few tips to avoid bad smells and flies:

  • Take part in the collection every week, even if your brown bin isn’t full.
  • Freeze table scraps and put them in the brown bin on collection day.
  • Wrap your leftovers in newspaper.
  • Store your brown bin in a cool, shady place.
  • Wash your brown bin regularly with water, baking soda and soap
