The Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro inaugurated its first solidarity garden in the fall of 2023.

Located in a neighbourhood park at the intersection of boulevard Gouin Ouest and 2e Rue, the garden is the result of a close collaboration between the borough, the West Island Mission, with volunteers tending to the garden. One of the aims of the project is to raise public awareness about food insecurity.

“Urban agriculture is a living practice that contributes to achieving our environmental and accessibility objectives in all their forms. The creation of the solidarity garden is a tangible gesture within our community that helps to combat heat islands and promote biodiversity. It also aims to strengthen the social fabric of our neighbourhoods by dedicating a space for planting fruit, vegetables and herbs, which will subsequently be redistributed to families in our neighbourhoods”.

Dimitrios (Jim) Beis

Mayor of the borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro

An improved, more easily accessible garden

Redesigned in the fall of 2023, this garden has 25 planters, five of which are raised, making it easier to access the vegetable beds.

A new potable water supply and a drinking fountain have also been installed on the site.

The total investment of $192,000 has tripled the size of the garden and provided picnic tables, benches and a pathway through the park that is now wheelchair accessible.

The Solidarity garden in Gouin park received $117,688 from the City of Montreal’s Bureau de la transition écologique et de la résilience (BTER), as part of the Programme de soutien aux arrondissements pour l’aménagement et la réfection des jardins communautaires et collectifs publics 2022 et 2023

The Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro has committed $65,000 to the project, to which the West Island Mission has added $10,000 for the purchase of seedlings and site maintenance.
