In 2005, LaSalle was the first borough on the island of Montréal to set up an Urban Safety Actions and Issues Table.

Safety was targeted to maintain the feeling of security among LaSalle residents, which they consider to be an important part of their quality of life. Co-chaired by Mayor Manon Barbe and Patrick Lavallée Commander of community police station 13, a number of projects aimed at increasing residents’ sense of belonging have been implemented since this board was created:

• Improving the lighting in streets and parks
• Removal of graffiti
• Maintenance and safe facilities in the parks
• Speed-related awareness campaign
• Surveillance and prevention in and near the parks: police officers on bicycles, police cadets, police officers on foot
• Occupation of parks and public spaces: park facilitators and cultural activities
• Projects for youth and seniors developed in partnership with local organizations

The table’s mission

The Urban Safety Actions and Issues Table’s mission is to develop initiatives that will have a positive impact on residents’ safety. The borough and Montréal’s police force were already taking joint action. The table has made it possible for them to add and mobilize institutional partners and local civic stakeholders, develop a joint vision of safety issues in LaSalle and implement safety-related actions.

The table’s objectives

The Urban Safety Actions and Issues Table’s role will therefore be to develop and converge safety-related actions in LaSalle, to promote complementary, safety-related actions and encourage partnerships by setting up working committees. LaSalle’s joint action and consultation safety committee is made up of some twenty people from all walks of life in the LaSalle community. It sets up working committees to support the implementation of actions coming within its work plan.
