Éco Entreprise Québec will manage the collection of recyclable materials throughout the province from now on. Its objective is to build accountability among companies that produce containers, packaging and print materials, and optimize selective collection in Québec. Find out what’s changed.

The Government of Québec has designated the organization Éco Entreprises Québec (EEQ) to manage the recyclable materials collection and processing system.

A single list of materials accepted throughout Québec

Containers, packaging, and print materials are all that can be put in the bin.

Effective January 1, 2025, the list of recyclable materials will be the same everywhere in Québec. For example, all numbered plastic containers and packaging will go in the recycling bin. This will make it easier to do the right thing.

Recycling bins are changing colour: From now on, they will be blue

Green bins continue to be emptied at collection time, but blue bins – marked “Bac Impact” – are gradually being distributed to replace green bins that are damaged beyond repair.

Éco Entreprises Québec is managing and financing this transition.

The collection frequency will remain unchanged

The city continues to provide weekly recyclable materials collection.

A new inspection team will also ensure that everyone complies with the new requirements: Putting the right materials in the right bins and containers.

The benefits of a modernized selective collection

Éco Entreprises Québec represents and acts on behalf of all the companies that produce containers, packaging and print materials. The establishment of the selective collection offers multiple advantages.

  • Provides financial relief to municipalities, since the collection costs are now covered entirely by the companies that produce containers, packaging and print materials.
  • Encourages these companies to come up with new recycling solutions and to market materials that can be recycled, since they are now responsible for processing these materials.
  • Increases the volume of materials and creates new outlets for materials that are currently not recyclable.
  • Optimizes the performance of the selective collection on a province-wide scale.
