Temporary shelter and support resources for homeless persons
The city has proposed various resources for persons who are awaiting social or private housing. In the short term, Montréal will make two parcels of land available for the government to build modular housing on, in addition to the other resources.
Le projet mis sur pied en collaboration avec le ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux permettra d’aménager des habitations modulaires.
Characteristics of the modular housing units
- Temporary housing units will have one or two rooms.
- Users will have their own private space, with shared sanitary facilities, a shared kitchen, laundry facilities and a storage area for their individual belongings.
- Housing for a maximum period of 24 months.
- Up to 30 users per location, which means that 60 people will benefit from the project as a whole.
The fight against homelessness is a collective responsibility that requires the input of every level of government.
For every new resource that is implemented, the city and its boroughs provide their support to the organizations and staff involved in the fight against homelessness.
Location
The parcels of land chosen for these developments are located at 50-150, rue Louvain O. in Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough, as well as on the site of the former Hippodrome, in Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough. The land will provide an environment meant to foster the reinsertion of individuals and meet all the logistical requirements for this type of facility.
Other temporary housing options in Montréal
In addition to the future modular housing units, there are currently 3 other housing and support resources.
Transitional housing resources
Transitional housing resources provide a bed for several weeks to homeless persons who have been stabilized and are receiving services as part of a housing reinsertion program, and are awaiting housing. Facilities are open 24 / 7. To be eligible, users must take part in an access to housing program.
Emergency housing resources
Emergency housing resources enable homeless persons to obtain shelter in order to spend the night. Three meals are provided daily, and the facilities are open 24 / 7. Moreover, psychosocial support is provided to support users on their reinsertion journey, potentially leading them to obtain a housing unit.
Emergency housing resources are necessary to help stabilize persons who have lived on the streets and who require support in order to undertake the process of reintegrating housing.
Drop-in centres to rest and warm up
Drop-in facilities are open during the day and evening to provide a rest stop for homeless persons who are not benefiting from emergency or transitional housing resources. They are meant for a mixed clientele, including persons living with mental health issues or substance abuse. Registration is not required, and they do no have to spend the night.
