Removal of the Candiac Line: LaSalle Asking the ARTM to Reconsider its Position
The borough of LaSalle is urging the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM) not to go ahead with its proposal to eliminate the Candiac commuter train line.
Such a decision would worsen the lack of structuring public transit currently prevailing in the borough of LaSalle.
We are disappointed and concerned over the possibility of losing the Candiac line. This would represent one less transportation option for our borough, at a time when our residents have been calling for heavier and more structured public transit services for years now. This decision would once again increase transportation inequity.
The Borough wishes to point out that mobility and public transit issues have a considerable impact on the 90,000 residents, 26,000 workers and the development potential of the Borough. For a number of years now, LaSalle residents have been complaining about the lack of any significant improvement in public transit services in their community for almost 50 years. The elimination of the Candiac commuter train line would unfortunately deepen this historic deficit.
Nevertheless, the borough of LaSalle is once again expressing its strong will to work with the ARTM to develop a structuring public transit network that effectively meets the travel needs of its residents and businesses, but is making it clear that its objective is to improve it and add options to those already in existence.
