This spring, the Borough plans to plant trees on the public right-of-way near certain private homes. The homeowners directly concerned by this planting program were notified in writing in August 2024.

The homeowners concerned have until Friday, August 30, 2024 to submit their choice of tree species. Details of how to make their choice are provided in the written communication received by mail. If you have any questions or are having difficulty completing the online form, call 311.

Identification of the planting site

The borough will mark on the ground the locations where trees will be planted near the homes concerned. A post marked “Un arbre sera planté ici” (“A tree will be planted here”) will also be installed at the site, until the tree is planted.

What is the purpose of the watering basin

When a tree is uprooted in a field and placed in a basket, it suffers significant root loss. Up to 45% of its total root surface will be removed, or 95% of its length. At time of planting, because of the reduced root area, the tree is entirely dependent on water supply, which is why it’s so important to regularly water young plants, as rainfall is not sufficient to meet their needs.

For successful planting, it’s essential to create an effective watering basin at the foot of the tree. It collects the volume of water needed to hydrate the entire root system over its 80-cm depth.

Moreover, it must remain intact throughout the tree’s planting period and for the next three years. Once this period is over, the basin must be removed.

Other advantages of the watering basin:

  • Protects against injury
  • Reduces evaporation of the water from the soil
  • Reduces soil temperature variations
  • Reduces weeds
  • Improves the soil’s structure and enriches it
  • And lastly, the tree trunk must be kept clear at all times; no materials (soil, mulch, stone or plastic edging) or plantings of vegetation should be placed on or inside the basin.

What is the purpose of mulch?

Mulching at the foot of the tree or shrub provides the same benefits as the watering basin mentioned above in this article.
