The members of the Pierrefonds-Roxboro Borough Council, joined by representatives from the Lester B. Pearson School Board, proudly unveiled the newly installed playground areas at Grier Park, representing an investment of 1,4 M$ from the Borough’s Ten-Year Capital Expenditure Program.

A First Communication Station in a Borough Park

These new facilities emphasize the development of motor skills and the well-being of children. The park now also features a communication station, the first of its kind in the borough, designed to facilitate communication for children with language and social limitations due to autism spectrum disorder.

A Popular Gathering Place in the Heart of the Neighborhood

Families now have access to a newly developed area featuring new walking paths, a socialization and relaxation zone, a picnic area, urban furniture, a drinking fountain, an accessible communication station, a free-use ping-pong table, and a modern playground. Individuals with reduced mobility can also enjoy the space safely with wheelchair-accessible paved pathways.

Progressive Play Areas Designed to Develop Motor and Social Skills

The playground equipment includes elements that align with the latest guidelines from the Canadian Pediatric Society, featuring “supervised risky play” modules. For example, a climbing structure has been installed. Pediatric studies show that this type of equipment not only aids in the development of children’s motor and physical skills, but also boosts their self-esteem. Additionally, these structures encourage social interactions among children aged 1 to 13, reduce anxiety and stress, and help them push their boundaries.

While these modules may appear tall and unprotected, data shows that the risk of injury is relatively low compared to the numerous benefits, particularly for mental health. We encourage you to accompany and supervise your children so they can explore these features with confidence!

“I am thrilled that Grier Park, a highly frequented spot in our community known for its quality sports facilities, now boasts modern, inviting, and fun play areas. Our teams have come together to continue improving and revitalizing the infrastructures that enhance the quality of life and the experience for our citizens in the park. We have also incorporated sustainable design principles, in line with the ecological transition and safety standards. I am particularly proud of the installation of the first visual communication station in our borough, which supports children on the autism spectrum. This initiative, carried out in partnership with the Lester B. Pearson School Board and their Centre of Excellence, is a testament to our commitment to innovation and accessibility. I believe this project clearly demonstrates the Borough’s leadership and dedication to creating inclusive public spaces.”

“The Lester B. Pearson School Board is extremely proud to partner with the Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro on this initiative, which aims to make our public facilities, such as playgrounds and parks, as inclusive and accessible as possible. What started as an initiative in Quebec’s English schools has now expanded to a local park, and we hope that other boroughs and municipalities will also install communication stations.”
