Modernisation of de Deauville Park - A $3.5 M investment
Pierrefonds-Roxboro, June 29, 2023 - De Deauville Park has undergone a major facelift over the past year. The playgrounds now feature new ergonomic equipment and a splash pad. The site will eventually be equipped with a park shelter for moderate cultural activities or recreational use.
Located in the Cap Saint-Jacques district, the park is designed around the theme of nature, and as a result the use of noble materials such as wood, stone and metal has been favoured. The redevelopment work has also reconfigured some of the paths, improved the public furniture, provided areas of vegetation and included a drinking fountain.
The revitalisation of the park and the choice of new leisure installations are a direct result of the orientations identified in the Pierrefonds-Roxboro Master Plan of Parks and waterfront areas 2020-2035. The new concept is designed to be unifying, community-based, recreational and flexible, with accessible, non-directed play areas offering progressive climbing challenges for children, teenagers and adults alike.
The modernisation work began in August 2022 and required a total investment of $3,451,726, including a grant of $807,842 from the Programme de réfection et de verdissement des parcs locaux (PRVPL).
Highlights of the new de Deauville park design
he park's furniture is made from recycled ash wood. This is a nod to the trees felled in the park to combat the emerald ash borer. They were made by Les ateliers d'Antoine, a not-for-profit social integration organisation.
The park is home to the largest wooden playground in Quebec, according to Techsport, the company that designed the play structures on site.
Users of the water play area will notice fish carved into the lining of a water channel. They are designed to stimulate users' senses, as is the water jet activator, which takes the form of an ant's nest with ants drawn on it.
All three play areas are inclusive, so that children with physical or mental limitations can fully enjoy the facilities. In fact, that's why the swings have a seat that meets universal accessibility standards.
The stones deposited throughout the park's landscaping were recovered following excavation work on the site.
A natural fence has been created by integrating plants and gabions on the side of boulevard Gouin.
Finally, the park's sandbox is filled with sand that is particularly suitable for building sandcastles.
Coming soon: a mini-forest in the park
Le 19 août 2023, une activité de plantation d’une mini-forêt se déroulera dans le parc de Deauville. Les résidents du secteur et des bénévoles seront bientôt invités à y prendre part.
On August 19, 2023, a mini-forest will be planted in de Deauville park. Local residents and volunteers will soon be invited to participate in the planting.
The new vegetation, made up of 1,250 trees and 60 shrubs, will cover a total area of 416 m2 in this park located at the corner of rue Riva-Bella and rue Fontenay.
The project is inspired by the Miyawaki method, developed by the Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, which involves creating dense, fast-growing forests in small areas of the city.
This mini-forest project, which aims to increase the canopy, is one of the winners of the first edition of the City of Montreal's participatory budget. The investment amounts to $206,700 for de Deauville Park.
“The modernisation of de Deauville Park and the planting of a mini-forest on the site contribute to achieving the objectives of Montréal 2030, the commitments to climate change, and the commitments to inclusion, equity and universal accessibility in the borough”, concludes Dimitrios (Jim) Beis, Mayor of the Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro.
