Livres dans la rue program

Last updated December 14, 2023

This program helps kids ages 4 to 12 discover the joys of reading. Free reading activities are offered in elementary schools and parks, and  courtyards next to affordale housing projects in disadvantaged neighbourhoods where the need for literacy activities is greatest.

Description

The program includes a summer component and two elementary school components, the first for regular classes, the second for children taking reception classes as part of a francization process.
This program aims to:

  • Transmit a taste for reading in French.
  • Spark an interest in culture and knowledge.
  • Encourage children to practice speaking French with one another.
  • Promote French-language books, particularly those written and published in Québec.
  • Promote knowledge of the city’s library network and encourage youth to become subscribers.

Activities in elementary schools include 5 meetings lasting 45 to 60 minutes, whereas summer meetings in parks last 90 minutes and span a period of 7 weeks.

Presentation in regular classes

Numerous literary works will be presented to children through a reading given by a book facilitator. The meeting will culminate with a free reading period, either individually or in small groups, where youth are encouraged to choose books based on their tastes and interests.

Presentation to reception classes

In addition to readings of works by book facilitators, various activities will be offered to students, including free reading periods, tongue twisters, alphabet primers, word games, and comic strip workshops. Books and society games selected by facilitators will also be sent to participating classes to make more resources available in class.

Presentation during the summer

Program activities run from June to August in some 50 parks and courtyards next to affordabke housing complexes. Book facilitators venture out to visit youth where they live and offer a variety of books in an effort to foster and support their love of reading.

Eligibility

Teaching staff that wish to request a reading activity must be homeroom teachers or teachers in a reception class for students requiring French learning support at an elementary school located within Montréal city limits.

In the case of reception classes, teachers must also commit to taking part in an impact study during the activity series and to receiving a series of documents and returning them by the prescribed deadline.

Submit a request

Eligible persons must complete the form for a regular class or a reception class before December 22, 2023 in order to participate in the winter-spring 2024 season and before September 3, 2024 to participate in the fall 2024 season.

In partnership

The component for reception classes is offered under the Entente sur le développement culturel 2021-2024, concluded between the city and the government of Québec.
