Montréal’s Awards for the Promotion of the French Language

Do you know someone who has gone out of their way to promote the French language? Has your organization launched a French language initiative? Montréal’s Awards for the Promotion of the French Language recognize your actions to give French pride of place in our city.

Description

The city created these awards in 2022 as a yearly distinction. Their aim is to celebrate the efforts being made to promote French in all parts of Montréal and in all spheres of activity. 

Categories

There are two categories of awards:

Personality Award

Recognizes a Montrealer’s exceptional contribution to promoting the French language.

People’s Choice Award

Celebrates the mobilizing effect of a French language promotion initiative led by a Montréal organization.

Winners receive an honorary plaque.

Eligibility

Awards recognize initiatives carried out over the past two years.

Eligible achievements

The Personality Award goes to an individual who:

  • Has made an exceptional contribution to promoting the French language in Montréal. 
  • Has led at least one innovative achievement that has positively impacted the use or the notoriety of French in Montréal. 

Eligible candidates

Candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Be born in the Montréal agglomeration, meaning the 16 municipalities that make up the island of Montréal. 
  • Live or have lived in the agglomeration for at least two years.
  • Carry out or have carried out professional activities in the agglomeration for at least two years.

You cannot nominate yourself. You must be nominated by someone else.

Eligible achievements

The People’s Choice Award goes to an organization that:

  • Has made a major contribution to promoting the French language in Montréal.
  • Has led a mobilizing initiative in the Montréal community involving the use or notoriety of the French language. 

Eligible organizations

The organization (company, association or other organization) must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Be headquartered in Montréal.
  • Work or do business in the Montréal agglomeration.

Jury

The jury is composed of people who have promoted the French language in their field of expertise.

The city selects jury members. Representation targets for equity and diversity are determined each time the jury is renewed. Jurors have a one-year, renewable term.

Members cannot be Montréal city employees.

The call for candidates for the Awards for the Promotion of the French Language is now closed.

Awards ceremony

Awards for the Promotion of the French Languages was received on the 29th of March 2023.

The contest is part of the city’s  French Language Preservation Action Plan (in French) langue française and recommendations concerning the French language made by the city’s executive committee.
