Dogs with aggressive behaviour

To ensure public safety and promote harmonious coexistence between pets and people, the city has special provisions concerning dogs that bite or behave aggressively.

Aggressiveness is not unique to any particular type of dog. For this reason, no breeds, including pit bulls, are prohibited in Montréal.  

If you notice a dog behaving aggressively, report it to us so that we can address the situation: 

The dog can then be examined by a veterinarian to determine his or her condition and whether he or she is dangerous.  

Potentially dangerous dogs

Dogs that have been declared potentially dangerous are entered into a registry. There are special conditions for keeping the dog, including: 

  • The dog’s guardian must apply for a special permit issued by the city. 
  • The dog must wear the red tag that is issued along with the special permit.  
  • A poster is also provided that must be displayed at the dog’s home. 
  • The dog must be muzzled with a basket muzzle when outside the home, including yards and common areas like elevators.

If you adopt a potentially dangerous dog from a shelter, contact us by e-mail as soon as you bring your dog home.

Bringing a potentially dangerous dog to Montréal 

If your dog has been declared potentially dangerous, has ever bitten or attacked a person or animal in another city, or has attempted to do so, we will need to perform certain checks. Contact us by e-mail before you arrive in Montréal.

It is forbidden to bring a dog to Montréal that is under a euthanasia order.
