Service des affaires juridiques

The Service des affaires juridiques (legal affairs department) drafts municipal by-laws and represents Montréal in court. Its Bureau des réclamations (claims office) is where residents can apply for compensation if they believe that the city or one of its employees are at fault.

Mission

The Service des affaires juridiques has three primary missions. The first is providing support and legal representation to the city’s various administrative authorities (central departments and boroughs). This includes claims management; legal representation for the city, the 15 municipalities within the Montréal agglomeration, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) in penal and criminal cases handled by the municipal court; and providing services for an accessible, modern and efficient municipal court whose objective is to offer local justice to all litigants within the Montréal agglomeration.
