$2.1 million to improve road safety in Saint-Laurent
Saint-Laurent, November 12, 2024 — At its meeting on October 1, 2024, Saint-Laurent approved the signing of funding agreements for a total of $2,186,422 in financial assistance from the ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable du Québec.
Granted through the Programme d’aide financière du Fonds de la sécurité routière (PAFFSR), this assistance will be used to improve road safety in Saint-Laurent by carrying out 27 projects on the borough’s local road network.
In a context of increasing transit on the Saint-Laurent territory, which will soon be home to 5 REM stations and where there are already more than 100,000 workers every day, the safety of travel on the territory must be a priority. This is why our teams have been putting a lot of effort and resources into this area for many years. I’m delighted to receive this funding, which will enable us to continue our work in this area, and I’d like to sincerely thank the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable du Québec for its support.
I made a commitment, when we tabled our Plan d’action en sécurité routière 2023-2028, to guarantee safe travel for all, especially near schools. I’m therefore delighted to see the enthusiasm of our partners, in this case Ville de Montréal, whose Saint-Laurent borough is presenting 27 projects! Let’s not forget that each of these initiatives contributes to improving road safety in Québec and saving lives in the process.

The funding agreements stipulate that the PAFFSR will finance a maximum of 80% of the eligible costs of selected projects, up to a maximum of $350,000 per project. Saint-Laurent, for its part, has committed to cover at least 20% of the eligible costs per project.
Created by the ministère in 2012 to distribute surplus funds from the Fonds de la sécurité routière, the PAFFSR is intended to finance road safety and road victim assistance measures and projects throughout Quebec. In Saint-Laurent, this will involve the following, among others:
- Installing speed bumps and curb extensions
- Making certain streets and intersections safer
- Installing raised pedestrian crossings
- Installing raised intersections
Similar work was carried out earlier in 2024 thanks to a $1.5 million investment in collaboration with the Ville de Montréal. By continuing with these projects, Saint-Laurent aims to continue to improve the safety of travel on its territory for all users, a desire that is part of its 2022-2025 Strategic Plan and can be seen it its extensive review of on-street parking undertaken in 2023. This review includes:
- The installation of signs indicating the five-metre clearance and intersections, in accordance with the Québec Highway Safety Code
- The introduction of new time slots for on-street parking
- The adoption of resident-only parking stickers in certain areas around future REM stations
