Collections in Lachine: Sorting, Composting, Recycling

Do you know Lachine’s collection schedules in your sector? Do you know what to put in which bin? Here’s a handy guide to help you do all that!

Household waste and upholstered bulky items

Your garbage containers must not contain any recyclables (containers, packaging, printed matter), nor any food or green waste.

Good to know: upholstered or fabric-covered bulky items (sofas, mattresses, rugs, carpeting, etc.) are picked up during this weekly collection.

Recyclables

Printed matter, containers and packaging must be placed in the recycling bin in no particular order. These items must be emptied, rinsed and separated from each other (for example: remove the plastic wrap from a cookie package). Please note: Non-see-through garbage bags are not picked up during this collection, even if they are placed in the green or blue bins provided by the Borough.

Starting November 3, 2025, there will be changes to recycling collection days in certain sectors of Lachine.

Recycling bin collection is carried out:

A : Monday

B : Thursday

C : Tuesday

D : Wednesday

Details on the sectors:

  • Sector A is located north of rue Victoria, between 55e and 26e Avenue
  • Sector B is located north of rue Victoria, between 25e and 10e Avenue
  • Sector C spans the borough south of rue Victoria, from west to east, (including the Lachine-Est neighbourhood)
  • Sector D is located north of rue Victoria, between 11e and 1ere Avenue and also includes the Saint-Pierre neighbourhood

Notes:

  • The south side of rue Victoria is in sector C while the north side is included in sectors A, B or D.
  • 10e and 25e avenues are included in Sector B.

Organic waste

Organic waste must be disposed of in the brown bin provided by the borough. Food waste may be wrapped in paper or cardboard (bags, boxes, newspapers, flyers). Plastic bags are prohibited, even if they are compostable or biodegradable.

Acceptable materials

  • Food waste
  • Food-soiled paper and cardboard (plates, pizza boxes)
  • Green waste, including leaves (any excess may be placed in paper bags or hard, reusable containers)

Non-upholstered bulky items

Non-upholstered bulky items (such as household appliances, furniture and toilets) as well as construction, renovation and demolition debris are picked up twice a month (on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month in sector 1, and on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month in sector 2). Bulky items and construction debris placed in bags will not be picked up (all types of bags are prohibited for these special collections, including “construction” bags).

Which bin should I use for what?

To find out how to dispose of an item, consult the online Ça va où? guide provided by RECYC-QUÉBEC, the Société québécoise de récupération et de recyclage

Where are the waste depots?

Ecocentres allow you to dispose of large items, construction debris, hazardous household waste and old electronics.

The Éco-quartier Lachine provides drop-off points for small items not accepted in regular collections, such as batteries, small electronics, ink cartridges and water filters.
