Declare material used for the private section of the water service line
Have you changed your water service line? If there is lead in your service line, you must notify us when you replace it. Here’s what to do.
Your responsibility as an owner
The water service line has two portions:
- The private portion, from the inside of the building to the edge of your property, belongs to you.
- The city is responsible for the public portion of your water service line, which runs from your property line to the water main in the street.
Replacing your lead water service line: Your responsibility
If your service line is made of a non-compliant material, such as lead, you must replace it.
There are several clues that can help you identify the material of your service line. For example, a lead pipe is gray and does not attract a magnet.
No matter the material used for your service line, you can declare it to help us keep our resources up to date, such as the map of lead water service lines (in French).
Documents required
Photos of your water service line
Please provide 2 photos of the water service line inside your building:
- A photo of the portion of the pipe between:
- The foundation wall or floor
- The tap used to cut off the water supply to the building
2. A photo of the immediate surroundings of the water service line.
Proof that the material is compliant
To prove that the pipe of the private section is compliant along its entire length, both inside the house and under your land, please provide one of the following:
- An invoice specifying the material and length of pipe replaced
- One or more photos of the replacement work showing:
- The new pipe in the excavation
- The land during construction (including the street address)
- Any other document clearly proving the material of the water service line on the private section.
