Get or renew a library card

Would you like to borrow a book, digital book, movie or music in one of Montréal’s libraries? Library cards are offered free of charge to residents and are valid for two years. Here’s how to obtain or renew your card.

Library cards give you access to a number of services.

Card holders can:

  • borrow items from Montréal’s libraries
  • access the digital library to download digital books, read newspapers from all over the world and listen to music
  • enjoy activities and educational opportunities

Your library card also gives you access to the French-language Loisirs Montréal online service. You can reserve sports centres and register your family for activities or day camps.

Conditions for getting the card vary. In some cases, fees may apply.

All residents

Your library card is free of charge. It is valid for two years.

Non-residents with ties to Montréal

1. Property owner in Montréal

Your library card is free of charge. It is valid for two years.

  • Paid municipal tax account

2. Student in Montréal

Your library card is free of charge. It is valid for one year.

  • Identity document
  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of full-time studies at an educational institution in Montréal

3. Representative of an organization located within Montréal city limits

Your library card is free of charge. It is valid for one year.

  • Form available in librairies

Non-residents

Fees apply. Your card is valid for one year.

  • Ages 13 and under: $44
  • Ages 14 to 64: $88
  • Ages 65 and over: $56

Show one form of photo ID from among the following options:

  • Birth certificate in French or in English showing your date and place of birth
  • Proof of identity and residence issued by Doctors of the World
  • Citizenship card
  • Permanent resident card
  • Québec health insurance card
  • Passport in French or in English showing your date and place of birth
  • Driver’s license

Show one form of proof of address from among the following options:

  • Proof of identity and residence issued by Doctors of the World
  • Accès Montréal card
  • Bill from a public utility (electricity, telephone, gas or cable provider) that is less than three months old
  • Bill from an educational institution that is less than three months old
  • Monthly statement from a credit or financial institution that is less than three months old

Things to know

You may change your telephone number, E-mail address and password through My account or by contacting a public library in Montréal.

In the event that you move, you must change your address in person by providing proof of residence.
