Have a tree planted in honour of a life
Want to mark the birth or adoption of a baby? Commemorate the death of a loved one? In some boroughs, you can plant or adopt a tree, a symbol of life. Find out how to apply.
Depending on the borough, the program is called “One Child, One Tree: A Tree for Life” or “One Tree, One Birth: One Memory.” The program is free of charge. It helps to preserve and promote the quality of the environment while offering a souvenir to your family and friends.
The program is offered in these boroughs:
- To celebrate a birth or adoption: LaSalle, Montréal-Nord, Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, Saint-Laurent, Saint-Léonard
- In memoriam: Saint-Léonard

If you are the parent of a child born in the previous year, you can receive a tree to plant on your plot. A red oak is suggested for those with a large plot, while a serviceberry is more suitable for those with a small garden.
Registration
To apply, fill out the form below by April 1 and attach the following documents:
- Proof of residence in Lachine
- Identification for at least one parent
- The child’s birth certificate
The borough will contact you in June to distribute or deliver your tree.

Eligibility
This program applies solely to new births and adoptions, and is not retroactive. In order to participate, you must:
- Live in the borough in question.
- Submit your application during your child’s year of birth or adoption.
Planting
Location
The tree is planted on public property, in a park or on the public right-of-way in front of your home.
Period
Registrations are recorded during a full year, from January to December, and all the trees are planted at the same time during the following year.
Identification
The public tree management system associates the tree with the name of the child, which makes it possible to easily locate the tree.
In the event of multiple births or the adoption of siblings, the applicant will receive one tree per child.

In order to submit an application, you must go to your local Accès Montréal office and provide the following information:
- The desired location in which to plant the tree
- First name, last name, gender and date of birth of the child
- Name of the parents
- Your contact information (address, telephone number and e-mail)

Eligibility
In order to participate in this program, you must:
- Be a resident of the borough.
- Submit the application within three years of your child’s birth or adoption.
Planting
Location
- The location and species of tree are determined by the borough.
- For applications submitted between February 1 of the previous year and January 31 of the current year, trees are planted towards the end of May each year.
- In the case of a multiple birth or the adoption of a sibling, one tree per child is planted.
- The tree and child are permanently linked in the public tree management system.
- Once the tree has been planted, you will receive a certificate that shows its species and location.

In order to submit an application, you must send the following items to your local Accès Montréal office:
- The completed registration form (one form per child if there are multiple births).
- Proof of child’s birth (birth or adoption certificate, or child’s health insurance or hospital card).
- Recent proof of residence (electricity, tax, telephone or other bill) in your name and address.

In order to participate in this program, your child must:
- Be born in the 12 months prior to the application date.
- Live within the limits of the borough.
Planting
Location
The borough ensures that the tree is planted near the child’s place of residence.
Périod
The planting is carried out twice a year, in the spring and in the fall.
To keep in mind: Schedules can change due to weather conditions, the trees available, and the planting locations.
Identification
Once the tree is planted, you will receive a certificate showing its species and location. The public tree management system permanently associates the child with the tree.

In order to submit an application, you must send the following items to your local Accès Montréal office:
- The completed registration form
- Identity document
- Proof of residence
- A copy of the act of birth or adoption for the child

- reside in the borough
- have welcomed a child in 2024 (birth or adoption).
Planting
Location
The tree, whose species is chosen by the borough, is planted in a public park.
It remains the property of the borough; it is therefore not allowed to maintain it, enclose it or decorate it.

The public tree management system associates the child with the tree, which makes it easy to locate. In the event of multiple births or the adoption of siblings, the applicant will receive one tree per child.
Registration
- Registrations will be open from January 16th to February 16th, 2025. The registration form will be available on this page.
- If your request is accepted, you will receive an email this spring with the details of the planting location.
- Complete one form per child in the event of a multiple birth.

Once the tree or shrub has been planted, you will receive a certificate in the mail indicating the type of tree and where it is located. The tree and the person you are commemorating will always be connected in the public tree management system.
