In Montréal, all cats and dogs must be microchipped and spayed or neutered. Rabbits must also be spayed or neutered.

Microchipping

All cats, dogs and rabbits older than 6 months must be spayed or neutered. It’s a fast, easy and permanent way for lost pets to be found.

Spaying or neutering

All cats, dogs and rabbits older than 6 months must be spayed or neutered.

Spaying/neutering is recommended by veterinarians. It helps curb overpopulation and limit the number of unwanted offspring. It also prevents a great many health and behavioural issues, such as scent marking and running away. To learn more, visit the SPCA Web site.

Exceptions

If spaying/neutering or microchipping is contraindicated for your pet, you are required to provide us with a note from your veterinarian.

Spaying/neutering is not required for breeding cats and dogs. You must provide proof that your pet is registered as a breeding animal with a recognized breed association.
