Property assessment rolls

Would you like to learn more about property assessment rolls and the information they contain? Find out everything you need to know about Montréal’s property assessment rolls.

Tabling and purposes of rolls

Property assessment rolls, which are tabled every three years, are inventories of all lots and buildings located within a city or town’s limits. There is one for each of the 16 municipalities in the greater Montréal area.

The assessment rolls contain information that identifies and describes the use and physical characteristics of each building. They designate the owner(s) and show the value of each building, regardless of its nature, on the basis of its actual value.

Even if there are multiple owners, only 2 owners’ names appear on the 2026-2027-2028 assessment notice. You can see all the owners of a building on the online assessment rolls (in French).

Impact of assessment on property taxes

The assessment roll serves as the basis for calculating municipal and school taxes.

An increase in the value of your property does not automatically result in an equivalent increase in your municipal tax bill.

The city adjusts tax rates to reflect changes in assessment values. They are defined annually in the municipal budget, so as to secure the amounts needed for city services.
