Montréal has different regulations for flat roofs and sloped roofs. There are rules you must follow during roof construction, renovation or maintenance.
Standards vary based on the type of roof, the building and the borough in which your building is located.
Types of roofing
Flat roof or low sloped roof
A roof with a slope of less than 2:12 or 16.7 per cent is considered a flat roof or a low sloped roof.
Sloped roof
A roof with a slope equal to or greater than 2:12 or 16.7 per cent is considered a sloped roof (or pitched roof).

Authorized materials
No matter what type of roof you have, you must comply with the requirements of your borough and Québec’s building code.
When a flat roof is built or renovated, several boroughs require certain materials (including white roofs, grey roofs and green roofs) in order to reduce urban heat islands.
