If you are a tenant in Montréal and are dealing with cockroaches, bed bugs or rodents, you must immediately notify your landlord by taking the following steps.

If you are a tenant and you see vermin, harmful insects, rats or mice in your dwelling, you must immediately notify your landlord. Do not attempt to resolve the problem on your own.

  • By bailiff
  • By registered mail
  • By e-mail
  • By text message
  • By hand

In some cases, the registered letter is a prerequisite for opening a file with the Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL). Without this document, the case may be inadmissible. Contact the TAL for more information. 

Step 2: Request an inspection

If the problem is not resolved in spite of your efforts, you can ask the borough to carry out an inspection.

After the inspector’s visit, if you would like a copy of the inspection report, you will need to request access.

Step 3: Help in preparing your home for extermination 

In some cases, you may need help to prepare your home for extermination. To qualify for this assistance, your situation must meet certain criteria. 

If you are eligible, and have signed a consent form during the inspection, the borough will forward a request for assistance in preparing your home to the Service de l’habitation. 

Through an interdepartmental agreement, the Service de l’habitation forwards the request to the Office municipal d’habitation de Montréal (OMHM). After obtaining your consent, OMHM staff will prepare your home for you.
