Install, replace or remove a fireplace or a fuel-burning stove
If you wish to install a natural gas fireplace or own a pollution-emitting solid fuel-burning stove and want to replace it with a certified appliance, you must obtain a permit to do so. Find out how to obtain a permit.
A renovation permit is required to install, replace or remove a solid fuel-burning appliance (wood, coal, eco-friendly logs, pellets).
In some boroughs, this permit is also required to install, replace or remove a stove or fireplace that uses another type of fuel (fuel oil, natural gas or propane).
You are first required to have your existing chimney inspected by a chimney sweep or a professional inspector in order to ensure that it is suitable for its intended use.
Once you have received your permit and completed your work, be sure to comply with all legislation by declaring the installation, replacement or removal of your appliance.
